Currently on display: Jeff Dikio, Yoon Jeong Lee and Sid Parasnis

Jeff Dikio
Jeff Dikio's paintings are narrations of life choices with simplicity of form and a distinctive personal painting style. In his figurative works, sparse landscapes rendered in a rich, dark palette focus the attention on the psychological state of his solitary personages. They are latent beings, caught between moments, and seemingly never catching up to where they might have been. Equally, his unique application of paint lends the ethereal quality of refracted light to his interpretations of landscapes.

As a contemporary artist, Dikio is deeply influenced by the history of painting. The practice has a weighty and vaunted canon of which Dikio is a careful student. He looks closely at artists such as Turner, Olivera, and Twombly and develops his own work in tight relation to theirs and their place in art history.

The artist earned his BFA in painting at UC Santa Cruz and participated in a study abroad program in Prague. He has exhibited regularly in San Francisco and Santa Cruz since 1996.

Yoon Jeong Lee
Prior to earning her BFA from Academy of Art College here in San Francisco, Yoon Jeong Lee ("Eulee") studied arts and crafts in Korea and sociology in the Philippines. Eulee makes painting a way of life more than just an exercise in color and composition. She likes to think of thinking and feeling as different shades of the same process. Painting represents the physical combination of thinking and feeling, of thought and action, allowing Eulee to express herself purely and honestly.

Eulee's work is contemplative yet uninhibited. Her paintings are deliberate and thoughtful, the result of countless sketches and hours of reflection. Buildings, city life, and the human figure are constructed, deconstructed, then reassembled into the loose gestural compositions characteristic of her work. Eulee resists the idea that all art requires verbal explanations, preferring instead to let the viewer absorb the elements of the piece and respond to it in a personal, authentic manner.

Sid Parasnis
Siddharth refers to his paintings as 'architectural abstractions.' He finds inspiration in the quirky harmony of a building's structure, celebrating the rhythm of windows on a façade or the juxtaposition of a stairway to the wall it ascends. In order to reveal the beauty of these mundane, often overlooked spaces, Siddharth sketches and photographs buildings that catch his eye on his travels. Back in the studio, he translates these images onto the canvas, abstracting forms so that shape and color take over, making us look afresh at things we thought we knew.

The surfaces of his paintings are very important to Siddharth. He uses vibrant glazes of color carefully layered onto the panel, playing with gloss and matte finishes to bring certain elements of his compositions forward and cause others to recede. His goal is to strike a balance between likeness and abstraction. Sometimes the balance is tipped, and lush color obscures recognizable forms altogether.

Born in Kolhaphur, India, Siddharth has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows around the world. He is represented by the Go Gallery in Amsterdam and has shown at Art Resource Trust and Tao Gallery in Bombay. In addition, Siddharth has won awards for his paintings in the United States and India, including selection for juried expositions at EXPO XXIV in Huntington, NY, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and the Soho-Chelsea International Art competition in New York.
